The greater Amsterdam coastal area has five officially designated nude beaches within easy reach: three on the North Sea coast at Zandvoort, Bloemendaal aan Zee and Wijk aan Zee, plus several inland spots like Het Twiske and Zonneweide. Dutch law lets municipalities designate areas for nude recreation, and all five are clearly signed with the same national pictogram. Beaches here are wide, spacious and rarely overcrowded, which suits travellers who want a straightforward, well-organised introduction to clothes-free beach life.

REGIONAL orientation

The Netherlands has more than 90 recognised nude beaches, and the areas around Amsterdam offer a useful cross-section of what’s on offer nationally. Zandvoort, Bloemendaal aan Zee and Wijk aan Zee lie along the North Sea coast, backed by the dunes of the Zuid-Kennemerland National Park and the wider Noord-Hollands Duinreservaat. Zandvoort is the easiest to reach without a car, with a direct 30-minute train from Amsterdam Central. Het Twiske, a large lake and woodland recreation area north of the city, and Zonneweide, a sunbathing field inside Amsterdamse Bos on Amsterdam’s southern edge, show a different side of Dutch clothes-free away from the coast. All beaches covered here are within about 40 kilometres of central Amsterdam, and several can be reached entirely by public transport or bike.

Nude beach in Amsterdam
Zandvoort
52.35057535870155, 4.508773024256534

Zandvoort’s designated nude beach begins south of the main town beach and is clearly signposted, marked at intervals by beach poles running from paal 68 to paal 71. Officially recognised since 1975, it’s one of the longest-running nude beaches in the country. A handful of beach pavilions stand in the middle of the stretch, serving food and drinks, though most no longer allow nudity on the terrace. The North Sea stays cold here even on warm days.

Bloemendaal aan Zee

Bloemendaal aan Zee’s nude beach lies within a wider stretch of sand between Zandvoort and IJmuiden, backed by the dunes of Zuid-Kennemerland National Park. Walk to the far northern end and you’ll spot the sign marking the start of the next designated nude beach, IJmuiden aan Zee. The two run into each other with only a short unmarked gap between them, so a walk here can easily turn into two beaches in one visit.

Wijk aan Zee
52.5101603685991, 4.591739150072175

Wijk aan Zee’s nude beach lies within a stretch of beach, dunes and forest between the village and Heemskerk, part of the wider Noord-Hollands Duinreservaat nature reserve. Reaching the official designated zone is a longer walk than at Zandvoort or Bloemendaal, so the local custom is to go nude once you’ve passed the last beach houses. Like the other coastal beaches on this list, it’s wide and rarely feels crowded even on warm days.

Het Twiske
52.45625840936228, 4.881453455319581

Het Twiske’s nude beach, officially named Baaiegat, lies inside a large recreation area of lakes, grassland and woods north of Amsterdam. A stretch of sand runs along the lake, backed by grass for relaxing, with the water on hand for swimming and cooling off. It’s one of the country’s designated inland nude beaches, and it draws a busy crowd on warm weekends. The nearby lakeside pavilion is textile only, so most visitors bring their own drinks and food.

Zonneweide
52.308079091651386, 4.838201571716465

Zonneweide, Dutch for sunbathing field, is a nude sunbathing area inside Amsterdamse Bos, the large park on the city’s southern edge. It’s simply a grassy field rather than a beach, with no lake or sea access on site. Nude sunbathing is the norm here between April and September, when the area is officially open for it. A drinking water tap on site is the only facility.

GETTING THERE & what to know

getting there

All beaches are within about 40 kilometres of central Amsterdam. Zandvoort is the simplest to reach without a car, with a direct train from Amsterdam Centraal taking around 30 minutes. Wijk aan Zee and Bloemendaal aan Zee are best reached by car, or by a combination of train and bus. Het Twiske and Zonneweide are both close enough to reach by bike or public transport, since Zonneweide lies inside Amsterdamse Bos on the city’s own edge.

best time to go
The main season for these beaches runs from May to September, matching the official window for Zonneweide inside Amsterdamse Bos. Warm, sunny days draw the biggest crowds, especially at Het Twiske, which can fill up fast on summer weekends. The coastal beaches are wide enough that even a busy day rarely feels packed. The North Sea itself stays cold through the season, so don’t expect warm swimming water even in the height of summer.
legal status
Dutch law, under Article 430a of the Penal Code, nudity is legal in the Netherlands in natural spaces. All nude beaches in this guide are officially designated, and each is marked with the same national nude beach pictogram, so there is no ambiguity once you reach the signed zone. Nudity just beyond a designated area, such as the short stretch between Bloemendaal aan Zee and IJmuiden aan Zee, is not rare either.
what to bring
None of these beaches guarantee a nude-friendly bar or restaurant, so bring your own food and drinks, especially at Zonneweide, which has only a drinking water tap on site. At Zandvoort, a beer from a beach pavilion is fine to drink nude once you’re back on the sand. The North Sea stays cold, so pack a towel to warm up quickly, and bring your own shade since none of these beaches provide sunbeds or umbrellas.

FAQ

most asked questions

Is nudity mandatory, or can I keep some clothes on?

Nudity isn't mandatory at any of these beaches, though all five are officially designated for it. Expect to see a mix of nude and, occasionally, clothed visitors, especially closer to any beach pavilion or car park.

Are the nude beaches around Amsterdam good for first-timers?

Yes. Because Dutch law requires official designation, every beach in this guide is clearly signed with the national nude beach pictogram, so there's no guesswork about where the designated area starts. That makes them a straightforward place to start.

Are these beaches family-friendly?

They aren't set up specifically for families, and none have lifeguards. Het Twiske has the most facilities of the five, including toilets and shaded spots, but it's still a general clothes-free beach rather than a family-focused one.

Do I need a car to visit?

Not necessarily. Zandvoort is reachable by direct train from Amsterdam Centraal in about 30 minutes, and Zonneweide is inside Amsterdamse Bos on the edge of the city, easy to reach by bike or public transport. Wijk aan Zee and Bloemendaal aan Zee are easier to reach with a car.

What time of year are the beaches at their best?

The main season runs from May to September. Summer weekends bring the biggest crowds, particularly at Het Twiske, while the coastal beaches stay comfortable even on busy days thanks to their width.

Are there toilets or food available at the beaches?

It varies. Het Twiske has a toilet building on site, and Zandvoort has beach pavilions selling food and drink, though most don't allow nudity on their terraces. Wijk aan Zee, Bloemendaal aan Zee and Zonneweide have little to no on-site facilities, so bring your own supplies.
