REGIONAL orientation
These beaches stretch along more than 170 kilometres of Western Australian coast, from Swanbourne on Perth’s western edge down through the southern suburbs to Mindalong near Bunbury. Officially designated nude beaches are the exception rather than the rule in Australia, which means the ones on this list carry real legal weight rather than informal tolerance.
Not every beach with a reputation lives up to it. Rumours travel fast about which spots are clothes-free, but plenty of supposedly unofficial nude beaches turn out to be entirely clothed on any given day. Woodman Point is the clearest example here. It has no official status, and what happens there varies unpredictably from one visit to the next.
The trade-off across this stretch is straightforward. The beaches closest to Perth are the most convenient and the most social. The further you are willing to drive, the more privacy and space you tend to get in return.

ONE BY ONE

Swanbourne is Perth’s best known nude beach and the most convenient, close enough to the city for a quick afternoon out. Skinny dipping has taken place here since before the Second World War, and a council sign now marks the clothing-optional stretch. The beach is wide and open, with easy water and plenty of room near the entrance. Further along, the dunes get a reputation of their own, so most visitors are better off staying close to the start.

Woodman Point, south of Perth near Fremantle, has a reputation but no official standing. It’s a hit or miss experience in practice. Some visits bring a quiet stretch of sand, others bring a level of bathing suits that make nude sunbathing impossible. There’s no signage and no legal protection, so what you find depends entirely on timing and luck.

Warnbro, in Port Kennedy about an hour south of Perth, has been an official nude beach since 1988. The setup is simple, with straightforward parking, a short walk, and clear signage once you reach the beach. The sand is bright white and the water is shallow, calm and clean, more suited to a relaxed swim than to serious waves. There are no lifeguards, but dolphins are sometimes seen offshore.

Mindalong, near Bunbury and well outside Perth’s usual day-trip range, is the quiet option on this list. Its roughly 200 metre nude section has been officially designated since 1998, at the northern end of Maidens Reserve. Even on a summer Sunday, this stretch of sand can feel almost entirely empty, which is the whole appeal for visitors who want a nude beach without anyone else around.

GETTING THERE & what to know
getting there
All of these beaches are reached by car rather than public transport. Swanbourne is about 20 minutes from central Perth, making it the easiest to reach on a whim. Warnbro, in Port Kennedy, is roughly an hour south of the city. Woodman Point is closer, in Perth’s southern suburbs near Fremantle. Mindalong is the outlier, near Bunbury and well outside Perth’s city boundaries, best treated as its own day trip rather than an add-on.

FAQ
most asked questions
Is nudity mandatory, or can I keep some clothes on?
You can stay clothed at any of these beaches, nothing forces you to undress. Swanbourne, Warnbro and Mindalong carry an official nude designation though, so going without is the norm and what almost everyone does once they're past the signs.
Are these beaches good for first-timers?
Swanbourne and Warnbro are the more straightforward introductions. Both are official, and the signage makes it hard to end up somewhere you didn't mean to be. Mindalong suits someone who already feels comfortable with the idea and wants a quieter version of it.
Do I need a car to visit?
Yes, effectively. All of these beaches are reached by road, and Mindalong in particular is impractical without one, given how far it is from Perth. A car also makes it realistic to fit more than one beach into the same day, at least among the ones closer to the city.
What time of year are the beaches at their best?
Mornings matter more than the season here, since a strong afternoon sea breeze known as "The Doctor" affects the whole coast. Summer weekends bring the biggest crowds to Swanbourne, while Mindalong tends to stay quiet even during peak season. If you want calm water and empty sand, arrive before midday.
Are there toilets or food available at the beaches?
Barely. Swanbourne has small changing rooms with single showers, and a cafe nearby if you need food. The other beaches on this list have no on-site facilities at all, so bring water and whatever else you'll need for the day.
Is Woodman Point actually a nude beach?
Not officially. It has a reputation as an unofficial spot, but what happens there varies from one visit to the next, and there's no legal protection either way. Treat any nudity there as something that happens informally rather than something you're entitled to.
