REGIONAL orientation
Formentera covers under 20 kilometres from tip to tip. That scale means a small car or scooter can reach all four main nude beaches in a single day, which is a meaningful practical advantage.
Nudity on Formentera is not confined to formally designated beaches. A local understanding applies: every beach on the island is effectively clothing-optional, with the single exception of Es Pujols, the only fully urban beach. In practice, the four beaches covered here operate with a predominantly nude crowd, without enforcement or signage in most cases.
The island has no clubs and few large hotels. Most visitors come specifically for the beaches and the pace. That visitor profile shapes the atmosphere, Formentera’s beach culture is relaxed and self-selecting in a way that Ibiza’s is not.
A practical note: Formentera’s peak season still brings significant tourist pressure to Ses Illetes in particular. Day-trippers from Ibiza arrive in volume during July and August. But the island handles it better than its larger neighbour: the beaches are longer, the volume is lower, and quieter alternatives are within short reach.
the nude beaches
ONE BY ONE

Three beaches in sequence at the Es Calo fishing harbour on Formentera’s eastern coast. The closest to the car park carries a mixed crowd. The two further beaches are consistently nude, particularly from late May onward. Rocky and sandy sections mix across the coves. No facilities at the nude sections; small restaurants are a five-minute walk back to the fishing village.

Formentera’s longest beach, running along the southern coast with nudity as the consistent social norm. Sections near the Blue Bar and the small restaurant are busier. Stretches between those anchors are quieter, particularly on weekday mornings. The beach faces south with calm water and a sandy bottom. Limited toilet and shower points are available. Shade on the beach itself is minimal.

Sandy and narrow, on the northern tip of Formentera, with water on both sides and open views to Espalmador island. Ranked the best beach in Spain and among the top globally. Clothing-optional and popular with day-trippers from Ibiza: the crowd is large and mixed in July and August. A natural park with no beach facilities, which keeps the shoreline itself clean and undeveloped.

South of Ses Illetes on the same sand peninsula, facing the sheltered eastern water. Consistently clothes-free and considerably quieter than its famous neighbour. Most Ses Illetes day-trippers do not walk the extra distance. On peak summer days when Ses Illetes is at capacity, Levante remains spacious. Morning is the better half of the day: shade from the dune ridge arrives in the afternoon.

GETTING THERE & what to know
getting there
Formentera has no airport. Fly to Ibiza (IBZ) and take the ferry from Ibiza port. Balearia, Trasmapi, Aquabus, and Formentera Lines all operate the crossing, which takes approximately 30 minutes. Up to 23 sailings per day run in peak summer; book ahead in July and August. The ferry arrives at La Savina port on Formentera’s northwest coast. From there, hire a car or scooter to reach the beaches.

FAQ
most asked questions
Is nudity mandatory at Formentera's beaches, or can I keep clothes on?
No beach on Formentera enforces nudity. At Es Migjorn, nudity is the social norm and most visitors are unclothed, but clothed visitors are present and not turned away. At Ses Illetes, the crowd is mixed, particularly in high season. Keeping clothes on will not cause any issue at any beach on the island.
Are the nude beaches of Formentera good for first-timers?
Formentera is one of the more accessible starting points in Europe for first-time clothes-free beach visits. The culture is permissive and low-pressure. Es Migjorn is large enough to find a comfortable spot without feeling exposed. Early May or September, when the beaches are quieter, give the easiest first-visit conditions.
Are these beaches family-friendly?
In practical terms, yes. All four beaches are calm, safe for swimming, and carry no adult entertainment culture. Ses Illetes has flat, shallow water at the northern end, though it is very crowded in August.
Do I need a car to visit the nude beaches of Formentera?
A car or scooter is the most practical option. The beaches are spread across the island. Bus Line L3 from La Savina port serves Ses Illetes in summer, making that beach reachable without transport. For Es Migjorn, Es Calo, and Playa Levante, hire transport is strongly recommended.
What time of year are the beaches at their best?
May to June and mid-September to early October give the best balance: warm enough for swimming, reliably sunny, and noticeably quieter than peak season. July and August are peak season on Ses Illetes; Es Migjorn handles the volume better. The island closes down substantially after mid-October.
Is there food or water available at the beaches?
Es Migjorn has the Blue Bar and a small restaurant, plus limited toilet and shower points along the beach. Ses Illetes has no facilities at all (natural park rules); the nearest food is back in La Savina port. Es Calo's nude sections have nothing; village cafes are a short walk from the car park. Playa Levante has nothing. For any beach beyond Es Migjorn, carry what you need.
Is there a way to reach Ses Illetes without a car?
Yes. Bus Line L3 runs from La Savina ferry port to Ses Illetes in summer, taking approximately 10 minutes and costing around 10 euros return. This is the recommended option in July and August, when the car park fills by mid-morning and vehicle access is then blocked for the rest of the day. The bus runs reliably during the main season.
