Gran Canaria covers a variety of nude beaches and naked coastal spots spread across its whole coastline. The Maspalomas dunes are the established hub and one of Europe’s most visited nude beach destinations. Options range from busy social beaches to remote pebble coves requiring an hour’s drive on dirt roads. A car is essential for anything beyond the south coast.

REGIONAL orientation

Gran Canaria is the third largest of the Canary Islands and sits roughly 200 kilometres off the West African coast. The island has a varied geography. The desert dunes of the south give way to a green mountain interior and a cooler, more urban north where Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the island’s capital, is located. The southern coast receives the most sunshine and the least wind, making it the main area for beach holidays throughout the year. The north coast is noticeably cooler and wetter, particularly in winter. Nudity is common and unremarkable on several stretches of the south and west coast. The Maspalomas dunes are the most famous site, but the island has clothes-free options across most of its coastal zones. The southern beaches near Maspalomas are served by bus from Las Palmas. The southwest coast coves, the west coast beaches, and the north coast hiking spots all require driving.

ONE BY ONE

Gran Canaria nude beaches
Maspalomas and Playa del Ingles
27.7606, -15.5860

One of Europe’s most established nude beach areas, running several kilometres along the southern dunes. The official nude section falls roughly between beach bars 3 and 8, though in practice naked visitors spread along most of the stretch. What sets this beach apart is that nudity is accepted at several beach bars along the strip. Meaning that you can order a drink without clothes. The dunes are one of Europe’s leading LGBTQ+ beach destinations, with the gay-popular crowd concentrated around bar 7. Around sunset, parts of the dunes are used for outdoor sexual activity.

Playa de Aguadulce
27.9638, -15.3817

The only nude beach on the east coast is a small, quiet bay with dark volcanic sand near the town of Tufia. Easy to reach and rarely crowded. Access is straightforward from the town itself. The main trade-off is proximity to Gran Canaria Airport. Aircraft noise is a constant presence and requires some tolerance. For those who can set that aside, this is a relaxed and accessible alternative to the busy south coast.

Playa Mujeres
27.7530, -15.6390

A dark-sand cove on the southwest coast with a more intimate character than its neighbour Playa Montana Arena. The atmosphere is quieter and more sheltered. Naked visitors consistently outnumber clothed ones. A good option for those who want the southwest experience with smaller numbers and a more private feel. No facilities.

Playa Montana Arena
27.7507, -15.6407

The most popular of three neighbouring southwest coves, with a longer sandy stretch giving easy access to the water. More active in atmosphere than its neighbour Playa Mujeres, while still quiet by Maspalomas standards. No facilities of any kind. A rocky coastal path descends from the highway car park. The consistent clothes-free character and the isolation from the resort strip make this the standout choice among the southwest beaches.

Playa de Tauro
27.7954, -15.7289

A west coast beach just north of the tourist town of Puerto Rico with an uncertain clothes-free character. Most of the time, nude bathers are concentrated in a separate area behind vegetation at the back of the beach. Worth noting as a potential west coast option, but the mixed and unclear character means it cannot be relied upon as a clothes-free spot.

Gran Canaria nude beaches
Playa Medio Almud
27.8019, -15.7394

A sheltered west coast cove reached via an unlikely-looking unused road from the highway. The setting is intimate and the atmosphere consistently clothes-free. Calm atmosphere, no facilities, and more isolated than the southwest coves. The combination of seclusion and reliable nudity makes this one of the more rewarding finds on the west coast.

Playa Veneguera
27.8468, -15.7913

A long, quiet west coast beach beyond Playa Medio Almud, rarely visited and entirely pebbled. The sea is rough and swimming is not possible. What the beach lacks in comfort it makes up for in solitude: finding another person here is unusual. Reaching it requires serious commitment. A 10-kilometre dirt track from the main road takes well over an hour to drive. This is a destination for those who value complete isolation above all else and are prepared for the access conditions.

Playa de Güigüí
27.9487, -15.8280

One of the most remote beaches on Gran Canaria, mentioned here for those specifically seeking total solitude in nature. Reaching it requires a long drive or hike. The experience is described as being completely alone with the landscape.  Research and local guidance are strongly recommended before attempting to reach this beach.

Playa Tasarte

A remote beach mentioned alongside Playa de Gui Gui as an option for those seeking complete isolation. Like Gui Gui, it requires significant effort to reach and offers an environment where encountering other people is unusual.

Playa del Juncal
28.1172, -15.7042

A recommended north coast beach set in a sheltered cove surrounded by nature, with no development visible. Reached by following a hiking trail north from Puerto de las Nieves, near the town of Agaete. The walk takes approximately half an hour. The pebbled surface and strong current make swimming impossible, making this a beach suited to sunbathing and those who enjoy the hike as part of the experience. For north coast visitors willing to walk, this is the standout option in the area.

Playa de la Guancha
28.1651, -15.6545

A north coast beach north of Puerto de Sardina. It is not listed among the more scenic or comfortable beaches on the island, but its surf character sets it apart from every other clothes-free spot on Gran Canaria. The beach is said to have one of the world’s best bodyboarding waves. For those who combine naked sunbathing with water sports, particularly bodyboarding, this is the relevant destination.

Gran Canaria nude beaches
Playa El Bufadero
28.1538, -15.5249

A stretch of large flat stones rather than a conventional beach, located on the north coast between Agaete and Las Palmas. The practical beach experience is minimal: no sand, no shade, and the surface requires a firm mat or towel. The setting, however, is extraordinary. Ancient salt mines sit on one side and large Atlantic waves on the other. For those who value landscape and historical character over sand and swimming, El Bufadero is one of the more unusual and memorable clothes-free spots on the island.

Playa El Cofital
28.1607, -15.4393

A clothes-free option within easy reach of Las Palmas city, located on the La Isleta peninsula just north of the city centre. Signage designates a nude section, though in practice naked bathers spread along any quieter part of the beach rather than concentrating in one area. One of the few northern beaches where the sea is calm enough to swim. Urban in character, with city infrastructure visible, but a practical option for those based in Las Palmas who want a clothes-free day without driving south.

GETTING THERE & what to know

getting there

Gran Canaria Airport (LPA) is 32 kilometres from Maspalomas, approximately 22 minutes by car. Multiple airlines serve the island year-round from across Europe. Buses 66, 90, 05, and 36 connect Las Palmas with Maspalomas and Playa del Ingles, making the south coast reachable without a car. A hire car is needed to reach the southwest coast coves, the west coast, and north coast beaches.

best time to go
Gran Canaria can be visited year-round. The south coast stays warm in winter, with temperatures into the twenties degrees Celsius in December and January. July and August are the busiest months on the south coast. The north coast is cooler and wetter in winter. For the widest range of beach options in comfortable conditions, April to June and September to October work well.
legal status
Nudity is legally tolerated in Spain. There is no specific law prohibiting public nudity under the Spanish legal framework. In the Canary Islands, going nude is accepted practice on quiet and remote beaches. Some areas like Maspalomas and Playa El Cofital have designated nude sections.
what to bring
The southwest coast coves (Mujeres, Montana Arena, Carpinteras) and the west coast beaches have no facilities at all, so bring food, water, and shade. The rocky descent paths to those beaches are easier in closed-toe sandals than flip-flops. At Maspalomas, the beach bars along the strip cover food and drink. For north coast beaches like Playa del Juncal and Playa El Bufadero, the pebble or stone surface means a towel you are comfortable lying on hard ground with is worth packing. Swimming is not possible at most north coast spots due to strong currents.

FAQ

most asked questions

Is nudity mandatory, or can I keep some clothes on?

Nudity is not mandatory on any of Gran Canaria's nude beaches. All are clothing-optional in practice. At Maspalomas, clothed and naked visitors share the same stretch without issue. The southwest coast coves are more consistently nude in atmosphere, but there is no expectation or enforcement.

Are the nude beaches of Gran Canaria good for first-timers?

Maspalomas is a reasonable first choice: large, relaxed, and low on social pressure. The mix of clothed and nude visitors helps ease the transition. For a quieter first experience, Playa Montana Arena on the southwest coast offers a more private setting without the scale and activity of the dunes.

Are these beaches family-friendly?

The south coast beaches are broadly fine for families during daylight hours. The Maspalomas dunes become less appropriate for children around sunset, when outdoor sexual activity occurs in parts of the dune area. The southwest coves and El Cofital in Las Palmas are comfortable for families who can manage the rocky access paths.

Do I need a car to visit?

It depends on where you want to go. Maspalomas and Playa del Ingles are served by several bus lines from Las Palmas. All southwest and west coast beaches, and north coast options including Playa del Juncal, require a hire car. A car is strongly recommended for anyone who wants to explore beyond the south coast.

What time of year are the beaches at their best?

Gran Canaria is great year-round. The south coast stays warm in winter (16 to 20 degrees Celsius). July and August bring the most visitors to Maspalomas. The north coast is cooler and wetter in winter and less reliable for beach time. April to June and September to October give the widest range of options in comfortable conditions.

Are there facilities at the nude beaches?

Only at Maspalomas, where the beach bar strip is accessible in the nude. The southwest coast coves, the west coast beaches, and the north coast spots have no facilities at all. El Cofital in Las Palmas has urban services nearby. For any beach beyond Maspalomas, bring everything you need for the day.
