REGIONAL orientation
Rab has a particular reputation for acceptance. The island’s people are known locally for welcoming visitors regardless of choices around clothing. Nudity is common on beaches well beyond the formal designations. In the Lopar area in particular, the tolerance extends to textile beaches as long as visitors move a little way from the main crowd.
The island’s history with nudity is both genuine and old. Kandarola has operated as a managed nude beach since 1936. The FKK tradition is strong here, but the atmosphere is less rigidly categorised than at a dedicated clothes-free resort on the mainland. People come to Rab for the beaches and the pace.
What sets Rab apart from Krk, its near neighbour, is the sand. The Lopar peninsula is a protected natural reserve with more than 20 beaches, several of which are officially designated nude. All of them are sandy. On a coastline where pebble and rock are the Croatian standard, this is a meaningful difference.
The trade-off for that quality is access. Rab requires a ferry, and once on the island, a car is essential. The Lopar beaches are spread across a natural reserve connected by a network of dirt roads. Without a car, getting between Lopar, Kandarola, and Pudarica on the same day is not practical.
the nude beaches
ONE BY ONE

An official nude beach in the Lopar natural reserve on the western side of the Lopar peninsula. The bay is wide and shallow, with water rarely exceeding one metre depth. Sandy bottom and clear water throughout. Pine woodland behind the beach provides shade on the approach. The dedicated car park and short 100-metre pine-shaded path make it the easiest Lopar nude beach to reach. No facilities.

An official nude beach adjacent to Ciganka in the same wide, shallow sandy bay on the western Lopar peninsula. The two beaches form a single clothes-free zone at the western end of the bay, with the two names distinguishing areas rather than entirely separate beaches. The same gentle, shallow water applies throughout. The natural reserve setting keeps crowd density low even in peak season. No facilities.

An official nude beach on the eastern side of the Lopar peninsula with open views across the Adriatic and the surrounding islands. Wide, sandy, and fully exposed with no natural shade. The walk from the nearest car park takes 15 to 45 minutes depending on your starting point, which keeps the beach considerably quieter than Ciganka. The visual setting is the strongest of the four Lopar beaches. No facilities.

An official nude beach on the eastern Lopar peninsula, adjacent to Sahara and reached by continuing the same coastal trail. Sandy and open-faced with island views matching Sahara. The most remote of the four Lopar beaches, and consistently the quietest. Often visited in combination with Sahara on the same approach walk from the D105 parking areas. No facilities at all.

The main Pudarica beach is clothed and has a cafe, bistro, lounger hire, and showers. Following the coastal hiking trails away from the main beach leads to smaller coves where nudity is the norm and company is minimal. Some coves are reachable only by boat. The setting is notable for southern Rab: white sand and clear shallow water give this coastline a character distinct from the northern part of the island.

Claimed as the world’s first official nude beach, operational since 1936 and managed by the Juresic family for the last thirty years. A day-visit naturist resort with a 300-metre designated nude beach and further nude coves accessible via hiking trails at either end. Entry fee of 5 euros includes parking and all on-site facilities: restaurant, bar, pool, showers, toilets, volleyball court, and chair hire.

GETTING THERE & what to know
getting there
Rab is reached by ferry. Two main options exist: a car ferry from Valbiska on Krk island to Lopar on Rab, operated by Jadrolinija with multiple daily sailings year-round; and a passenger-only fast ferry from Rijeka to Rab town, operated by Jadrolinija 4 times weekly, with a 2-hour crossing and a one-way ticket of approximately 12.70 euros. A hire car is essential on arrival. The beaches are spread across the island and no practical public transport alternative exists between areas.

FAQ
most asked questions
Is nudity mandatory at Rab's nude beaches, or can I keep clothes on?
No beach on Rab enforces nudity, with the exception of Kandarola where nuditu is realluy expected. Yet, the social norm on any of these beaches dictates that they should be enjoyed in the nude when the weather permits, but clothed visitors are not prohibited. Pudarica's clothes-free hiking coves operate on informal tolerance rather than formal designation. The island's general attitude makes this one of the more relaxed environments in Croatia.
Are the nude beaches of Rab good for first-timers?
Kandarola is the most practical first-timer option on the island. The managed environment, clear entry pricing, and resort format make the first visit straightforward. The Lopar beaches are more naturalistic and require more planning. The island's accepting local culture is a genuine advantage.
Are these beaches family-friendly?
Ciganka and Kunjka are well-suited to families with children. The shallow bay water stays calm and rarely exceeds one metre depth, which is ideal for young swimmers. Kandarola also works well for families, with its pool and managed facilities. Sahara and Stolac are more exposed and open-water beaches, better suited to older children and adults.
Do I need a car to visit the nude beaches of Rab?
Yes. A car is essential on Rab. The beaches are spread between the Lopar peninsula in the north, Pudarica in the south, and Kandarola on the Frkanj peninsula. Moving between areas without a car is not practical. Hire a car when you arrive at the ferry terminal, or bring your own vehicle on the car ferry from Valbiska on Krk.
What time of year are the beaches at their best?
June and September deliver the best combination of warm water and manageable crowds. July and August are busy, but the natural reserve at Lopar limits vehicle access and prevents the beaches from becoming overwhelmed. Kandarola is a seasonal facility: confirm its opening dates before planning a visit in early May or late September.
Is there food or water available at the beaches?
Kandarola has full facilities: restaurant, bar, showers, toilets, and chair hire. Pudarica's main beach has a cafe and bistro. The four Lopar nude beaches, Ciganka, Kunjka, Sahara, and Stolac, have no facilities whatsoever. No exceptions. For a full day at Lopar, carry everything: water, food, and your own shade.
